Jeff Wall Photography Essay Example for Free
Jeff Wall Photography Essay Jeff Wallââ¬â¢s photography is a mixed media event that indulges more in narrative than in color, although color is an important part of his composition. Wallââ¬â¢s photograph is unique as well as reminiscent: his work builds off of the work of Delecroix and Manet. In this fashion Wallââ¬â¢s work combines a sense of artistic style with film and the ever present narrative. This paper will present three photographs of Jeff Wall with analysis on their use of narrative, color, composition and meaning (Holmes paragraph One). The Destroyed Room Jeff Wallââ¬â¢s expression in The Destroyed Room is in reference to window displays. In this photographer however the viewer gains a very different perspective than the neat and pedestrian window displays seen on 5th avenue during Christmas, instead Wall presents a room ripped apart. The main inspiration to the chaos as opposed to the control seen in typical window displays is in accordance to the punk style in which commodities and fanciful things such as high heels (as seen in the photograph) become a form of high class culture which the punks sought out to de-value as unnecessary. Wallââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ërevengeââ¬â¢ as he states in this room is against domesticity, of corpulent people living mediocre lives in display window fashion instead of focusing on what lies beneath the surface of their culture: the dirt, the chaos, the room shredded in a protest against a docile living condition placated the rich. Of this photograph, Wall states, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ I was lecturing on Romanticism. I think the Sardanaphalus is a very important picture historically and psychologically because it shows the eroticized ideal of military glory which characterized the Napoleonic period being turned inward, back toward domestic life at the end of that epoch, at the beginning of modern, bourgeois, neurotic private lifeâ⬠(MoMA paragraph One). Thus, this photograph is an elaboration on the idea that domesticity has no truth and thus the violence of the upheaval in the room. The Mimic Jeff Wallââ¬â¢s photography while alluding to specific figures in art, and their work, does not necessarily ââ¬Ëstealââ¬â¢ from these works, but enhances upon the concept which the artist originally wanted to present to the audience. In this fashion, Wallââ¬â¢s photography does not mimic other photographers but merely, as the saying goes, builds upon their shoulders, and their work into an evolution of art. In the photograph The Mimic Wall illustrates this point: Wallââ¬â¢s photograph pays homage to the works of ââ¬ËManet, Caravaggio, and Valezquezââ¬â¢ (MoMa paragraph Four) in that his focal figures are in the foreground of the piece, and they, as much as possible, appear to be life size (this is accentuated in their movement and their surrounding environment such as the buildings, the street and their placement next to one another). By using a trio as the focal point in The Mimic, Wall creates a specific dynamic between these figures in which the tension is very much palpable as the viewer may surmise from the look of the woman to the right of the man flipping off the other man, in the look of the central figure, one of angst, hate, and general animosity and the response of the figure on the left of the central figure in his response to being flipped off; the squint of the eye and the snarl in the lip ââ¬Å"Mimic was made in 1982 and was a pictures in which I concentrated a lot on a typical gesture, perhaps a micro-gesture but certainly a small gesture of race hatredâ⬠(MoMA paragraph Six). Wall does not only build tension in the photograph but in the elapsing space behind the central figures is seen the tension emphasized. Thus, although the photograph is expansive in its depth, itââ¬â¢s size and its movement from one figure to another it is also a very traditional ââ¬Ëportraitââ¬â¢ as is presented in Wallââ¬â¢s comparing of it to the three prestigious artists as mentioned above. Thus, although the crude behavior may be of a punk generation (the photograph was made in 1982), the candidness juxtaposes the classical feel of the piece. Milk Here again the viewer will see a typical motion of Wallââ¬â¢s in his photographer, that of explosion. Although most of his photographs portray the act of explosion after the fact (as in The Destroyed Room) this photograph portrays the act of explosion while midway through the air. This is in itself is a gesture of magnitude, as the other photographs mentioned in the paper only hint or makes previous reference to this motion (the racial hatred in The Mimic shows the subtle look of someone about to explode but not the full act). In this photograph Wall explores the natural shape and form of an eruption, as Wall states, ââ¬Å"The explosion of the milk from its container takes a shape which is not really describable or characterizable, but which provokes many associations. A natural form with all of its unpredictable contours, is an expression of infinitesimal metamorphoses of quality. Photography seems perfectly adapted for representing this kind of movement or form. I think this is because of the mechanical character of the action of opening and closing the shutterââ¬âthe substratum of instantaneity which persists in all photographyââ¬âis the concrete opposite kind of movement from, for example, the flow of a liquidâ⬠(MoMA paragraph Ten). Thus, the action of the milk stands as an opposite to the cameraââ¬â¢s shutter therefore mingling two opposite components into a single photograph which in itself becomes a mirror for fluidity. Conclusion Wallââ¬â¢s photographs have been explored in this paper as examples of movement, form, and the narrative of destruction in all three photographs is a palatable theme. This destruction as seen in accordance to denying domesticity, to what race hatred may bring out in people, and in the explosion of the milk carton all are facets of the same definition, that is, destruction breeds movement, as is seen in each photograph either with the lens, or beyond the lens and into the story of the photograph. Wallââ¬â¢s photographs are narrative pieces that focus on the artistââ¬â¢s own personal narrative to his predecessorââ¬â¢s in art such as Caravaggio and Manet and hit tribute to them in his work reflecting their genius and taking their development of human form and space to the next level; to the level of including personal narrative with photographic art, thus truly standing on the shouldersââ¬â¢ of giants and reveling in a new dream and progression of art into this new century. Wallââ¬â¢s photographs are a timetable from the past and into the future. This theme of destruction, or eruption and focus on the human condition only propels these ideas forward in a classical backdrop of foreground and space with the radical movements of the punk era and the politics of race matched with the fluid form of shapes, emotions, and that narrative is the theme which ties it all together. They made strategic alternatives to solve the problem. The strategic alternatives for KFC are follows: Re-franchise all company owned the Mexican units franchises. Completely divest KFC of Mexican operations. Leave Mexico as is and grow other foreign markets. The strategic that mention below are the political of Kentucky Fried Chicken to solve the problem in Mexico. Even though they try to the best sometimes they measure has the advantages and disadvantages. We can not imagine if Kentucky Fried Chicken Company does not have a political analysis. How the Pill Affects Your Body :: Birth Control Contraception Pregnancy Essays
How the Pill Affects Your Body Every night at 11 p.m., the alarm clock in 21-year-old Natachaââ¬â¢s* one-bedroom apartment goes off. It isnââ¬â¢t a signal to wake her up from a quick nap to write a paper or do some reading, but a reminder that it is time to take her birth control. As soon as it goes off her live-in boyfriend of three years, Julian, brings her a pill and a glass of water. ââ¬Å"In the beginning Julian used to call me at 11 to remind me to take my pill,â⬠said Natacha, who had a long distance relationship with him during the first two years they were dating. ââ¬Å"Now he just brings it to me.â⬠Natacha is just one of the many female students at Northeastern University who is currently taking the birth control pill. In a survey of 30 students, 56 percent indicated that they take the pill. ââ¬Å"Oral contraception is the most common [contraceptive] among students,â⬠said Leah McKinnon-Howe, a health care practitioner at Lane Health Center. ââ¬Å"I write more prescriptions for the pill.â⬠The birth control pill, which is used by over 16 million women nationwide, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1960 and is available in 41 brands on the market. The pill comes in two different forms, combination pills and progestin-only pills. Although both are made form hormones that are naturally found in womenââ¬â¢s bodies, the combination pill also contains estrogen, which is not found in the progestin-only pills. Combination pills prevent ovulation and thicken the cervical mucus that surrounds the egg, preventing the fusion of the egg and the sperm. Progestin-only pill also thicken the cervical mucus but usually donââ¬â¢t prevent ovulation. Estrogen and progestin are both steroids that are produced in the female body. Estrogen, the female sex hormone, is created by the ovaries, corpus luteum, and the placenta. It is responsible for the development of breasts and also controls the menstrual cycle. Progestin is also involved in the menstrual cycle. Produced f rom granulose cells, it is secreted during the second half of the menstrual cycle and assists in developing embryos if pregnancy occurs. According to McKinnon-Howe, there are many reasons why students choose to take the pill. ââ¬Å"They usually take it for contraception, but some are not sexually active. They take it for dysmenorrheal, some for cycle regulation, or the improvement of acneâ⬠said McKinnon-Howe. The advantages that are linked to taking the birth control pill are numerous.

Philosophy is Important :: College Admissions Essays
Philosophy is Important Everybody has something to learn about Philosophy. With the numerous different courses available to students at State University, one will always be able to find new and pertinent information not covered before in previous classes. This assures students that they will not be forced to take a class that is primarily review. By requiring students to take philosophy courses, the school is guaranteeing they get the full education they deserve. Philosophy is important because it helps to mature the whole person, instead of restricting them in a specialization of a particular field of study. College is where people go to discover themselves, and at times people just need a little nudge to get them going in the right direction. Philosophy introduces students to different styles of thinking, teaching them to think smarter and better. The class Critical Thinking, for example, explains how to create and use clear, logical arguments, presenting a skill useful in other many college classes, as well as a practical tool outside of school. High school does not offer enough philosophy classes to equip the average students for the rest of their lives. Therefore, to obtain higher-level philosophical training, one must attend college. Not many high school seniors are well versed in philosophical systems that are taught in a philosophy 201 class offered at State. Despite their importance, ethics are barely covered in high school classes. Training in ethics helps one identify the correct principles of conduct as accepted by specific professions, and humanity as a whole. When coming to college, students need to supplement their knowledge base with philosophy. Gonzaga University offers many philosophy courses for the incoming student.

In todayââ¬â¢s time, media has impacted everyone in the society. The entertainment world shows everything there is to consider in our present time. Whether it is good or bad, it is expected to be seen in the movies, TV shows and advertisements. Today, sexual scenes and pornography are just some of what entice young viewers to explore their sexuality. These are often related to sexual behaviors, in which are frequently very risky to both actors and viewers. The technological advancement that we have today creates ways for people to further discover their sexuality. Video cameras and Internet has come hand in hand in performing dangerous sexual acts. Nowadays, young teenagers view sexual behavior in association of pornography. In relation to the Health Belief Model, teenagers often perceive risky sexual behavior as ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠part of puberty. They perceive sexual activity as a reward as being a teenager. Risky sexual acts are perceived as a ââ¬Å"feel good, must haveâ⬠idea. Teenagers see the benefits of being accepted in the crowd, and feeling like grown-ups. They often do not see the negative consequences of the action, due to what is repeatedly shown in media. And because of that, the Social Cognitive Theory shows that risky sexual behavior is affected by the individualââ¬â¢s beliefs and the environmental factors. Of course, self-efficacy plays a big role to allow teenagers to perform such risky behaviors. Another model that applies to risky sexual behavior is the Theory of Planned Behavior. Due to normative beliefs of teenagers that the society welcomes sexual performance, they think that they should perform similarly. As well as the perceived control of action, teenagers believe that as a teen, they are in the stage of exploring ... ...Behavior. In our modern times, we can hardly find someone who does not know about pornography. Our sexuality in this advance age has become easy to experiment and manipulate. As sexual beings, we have mainly focused on our benefits from pornography. We have disregarded the different results that could be caused by it. Though we have seen pictures and heard stories regarding violence and assaults, we continue to our patronage to these industries. The next time we search for porn, maybe we should first think about the people in the explicit pictures and obscene videos. Do we know if the pleasure we are getting from the videos as satisfying for them? Are they making pornographic films for pleasure? Or are they forced to be part of this industry in order to survive a living? Perhaps, we have only set out our eyes on what is only seen and not on what is behind it.

Marriage Matters Summary Linda J, Waite
As a preface, Waite progresses through various statistics fostering today's pattern of decreased marriages. She states clearly that, ââ¬Å"The decline in marriage is directly connected to the rise in cohabitation-living with someone in a sexual relationship without being married. â⬠Statistics showed a vast decrease in marriages between both black and white marriages. This seems to be an epidemic in today's society providing examples which might reflect people or situations In our lives.Another one, of the many, shocking statistics show that about ââ¬Å"one thirdâ⬠of births occur outside of wedlock. Waiter's worry is that marriages are statistically more beneficial to the children who are conceived and born with a stable set of parents. The first argument poses a stance that health between a family is of greater quality when the family Is complete. That being said, Waite never quite defined what a complete family Is, but the term Is connotatively a derived of a mother, f ather, and could possibly consist of children. From the paper, a family Is anything Inside matrimony. Waiter's first argument for health is that marriage appears to reduce risky and unhealthy behaviors. Marriage will also increases material well-being such as income, assets, or wealth. The last component, which I think is the most beneficial, is moral support. All of these ideals are intricate measures needed for a healthy life-all of which stem and are heightened through marriage. The second argument for a pro marriage lifestyle is that life Is easier financially through a stable Income.Incomes can either be shared or enhanced with marriage. Waite argues that single parent households are in Jeopardy due to lack of sufficient funds and energy where dual parent homes are either amplified by double income or saved by production at home. Wives tend to lead the stay at home Job of doing the duties with house work while men go to work. This leaves more time to pay attention to family as w ell as diligence In their career while the wife rears the kids and does house work; leaving much more time to relax and recoup. The third argument supported by Waiter's article supports a greater intimacy between a couple in marriage. When people think of the word intimacy, it is attached (generally) to sex. Waite argues that not only are sexual needs exceeded, but emotionally the bond is wound tighter. ââ¬Å"The long term contract implicit in marriage- which is not implicit in cohabitation- facilitates emotional investment in the relationship, which should affect both frequency of and needs are met.
